More Competitive at European GT4 Championship R3 – Spa

The third round of the European GT4 Championship at Spa had an expanded entry of 57 cars and proved to be extremely challenging for the team coming just a week after the British GT race at the same venue and once again the results don’t fully reflect the progress being made. The circuit at Spa is known to be one of the most challenging circuits in the world, and often has weather to match. The circuit is 4.3 miles long and twists, turns and undulates through the Ardennes forest and is still one of the fastest circuits on the F1 calendar. The weather for the entire weekend was dry and hot and the track which had been resurfaced in places was very quick.

We had a power upgrade for this race which helped us be slightly more competitive throughout the weekend.

Our pace in qualifying was better than the previous 2 rounds and we qualified in the top 20 just 1.3 seconds off the pole position time, which on a long circuit like Spa we felt was reasonable.

My team mate Dexter started Race 1 which was run on the Friday evening in dusk going into the dark and unfortunately he was involved in an incident with 2 other cars after 9 laps and was unable to continue, so we were classified as a DNF.

I started Race 2 from 19th on the grid, got a good start but was out dragged down through Eau Rouge and up to Les Coombes on the first lap dropping me down to about 25th and I started my recovery from there getting up to 22nd at the pit stop for the driver change. Unfortunately my team mate suffered a tyre failure after just 2 laps when he ran over some debris and although he made it back to the pits the damage to the car bodywork meant that we had to withdraw from the race.

A disappointing result, but we are making progress and looking forward to the next round at Hockenheim in Germany in July.
